NSW Transport Operators: Claim $1,000 with SafeWork NSW Rebate

If you run a transport business in NSW, whether you’re operating tautliners, flat tops, tilt trays, steel transport, linehaul or regional freight, you may be eligible to claim up to $1,000 back on transport-specific safety equipment through the SafeWork NSW Small Business Rebate program under the NSW Government.

There are items on the eligible list that are highly relevant to transport yards, trucks, workshops and recovery vehicles. Here’s what matters for transport operators.

Transport-Specific Equipment You Can Claim

Below are rebate-eligible items that directly apply to trucking, freight, heavy haulage and logistics operations. There are other items mentioned on the SafeWork website.

Reversing & Vehicle Safety Systems

Blind spots and yard incidents are one of the biggest risks in freight operations.

Eligible items include:

  • Standalone reversing camera systems
  • Proximity detection systems
  • Warning beacons and vehicle-mounted safety lights

For fleets operating in tight metro depots or busy regional yards, this can significantly reduce vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian incidents.

Recovery & Remote Area Safety Equipment

For operators running regional NSW, construction support, mining routes or remote deliveries, the rebate includes:

  • Recovery winches
  • Recovery straps and chains
  • Tyre safety equipment
  • Emergency position beacons (EPIRBs)
  • Satellite phones

If you’re running B-doubles or heavy combinations in rural NSW, this is practical gear — not theoretical safety equipment.

Workshop & Yard Safety Improvements

Transport businesses with maintenance bays or loading zones can claim for:

  • Anti-slip stair nosing and surface treatments
  • Guardrails and physical barriers
  • Pedestrian separation systems
  • Improved industrial lighting

Slips, trips and falls in yards and workshops remain a leading cause of lost-time injuries in transport operations. Improving depot infrastructure is directly claimable.

Lone Worker & Communication Devices

For linehaul drivers, after-hours loading, or remote breakdown work:

  • Two-way radios
  • Duress alarms
  • Communication systems

These are particularly relevant for operators with:

  • Single-driver regional runs
  • Night-time freight operations
  • Yard staff working alone

Who in Transport Is Eligible?

Your transport business may qualify if you:

  • Are registered in NSW
  • Employ fewer than 50 full-time equivalent workers
  • Have not claimed the rebate in the last 5 years

This includes:

  • Small fleet operators
  • Owner-drivers with employees
  • Family-owned transport companies
  • Regional freight operators
