Toll-Free Melbourne CBD Bypass Set to Open in October

A major new bypass linking West Melbourne to the southern CBD is scheduled to open on October 27 as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

The Wurundjeri Way extension is Melbourne’s first new CBD bypass in 25 years. It creates a direct elevated connection from Dynon Road to the existing Wurundjeri Way, passing over Dudley Street. The road will be toll-free and designed to carry more than 10,000 vehicles daily from day one, with capacity expected to rise to 15,000 once the West Gate tunnels and the elevated Footscray Road open.

Construction has included a new bridge over Dudley Street, a 1.5-kilometre four-lane link to Dynon Road, and widening Wurundjeri Way to six lanes between Dudley and Flinders streets. These upgrades are set to improve access between the CBD, Docklands, South Melbourne, and the inner west.

The extension will make it easier for motorists heading to Marvel Stadium and the busy Docklands precinct, home to more than 73,000 workers and 17,500 residents. It will also provide seamless connections to the West Gate Tunnel, due to open later this year, offering a faster route to Werribee, Geelong, and the Surf Coast.
