NSW Transport Minister Outlines Freight Reforms and Industry Support

At the recent Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) conference in Sydney, NSW Transport Minister John Graham outlined key initiatives aimed at boosting the state’s freight sector. Speaking to industry representatives, Graham highlighted reforms to shipping and logistics, toll relief, and long-delayed rest area projects.

The minister emphasised the state’s freight review, released in June, which includes 95 recommendations designed to increase freight value by $1.6 billion annually by 2061. Plans focus on improving roads, rail, ports, intermodal facilities, and better strategic planning for industrial land. Graham stressed keeping intermodal hubs close to ports, airports, and population centres, and encouraged shifting freight movements to off-peak hours to ease congestion.

On rest areas, Graham confirmed an $80 million federal-state investment in a Western Sydney facility at Eastern Creek to improve conditions for truck drivers. Toll reform remains a priority, with a trial on the M5 East and M8 providing rebates to trucking operators to encourage motorway use and reduce costs.

Graham also addressed Port Botany reforms, confirming a staged approach under the Ports and Maritime Administration Act. He announced the appointment of an independent facilitator to mediate industry concerns and ensure consultation across all stakeholders. Updates to stevedore and container park charges were noted, aimed at improving transparency and supply chain efficiency.

Overall, Graham committed to working closely with the freight industry to ensure reforms deliver practical outcomes while addressing operational challenges and costs for truck operators.
