Choosing the Right Ratchet Strap for the Job
When it comes to securing loads, not all ratchet straps are created equal. Different jobs, load types, and hauling conditions call for different tools, and understanding these differences can save you time, effort, and potential headaches. In this guide, we’ll explore some of the most commonly used ratchet straps in the industry, each with its own unique set of features.
From the trusty Old Faithful 9m Ratchet Tie Downs to the innovative Smooth Operator ERGO Ratchet Strap, each strap brings something different to the table. Whether you’re hauling machinery on a flatbed, transporting pallets in a Pantech, or simply need an all-rounder for everyday use, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in and find the right ratchet strap for your next haul.
‘The Old Faithful’ – 9m x 50mm x 2500kg Ratchet Tie Down
The 9m x 2500kg ratchet has earned its reputation as the dependable workhorse of load restraint. With its traditional push up ratchet mechanism, this ratchet is trusted by truckies for its reliability and affordability. It’s the kind of gear that never lets you down, no matter how tough the haul. This ratchet comes with a hook and keeper which are the industry standard for ratchet straps.

‘The Smooth Operator’ – 9m Pulldown Ratchet Strap
Known as a ‘Pulldown’ or ERGO Ratchet based on it’s pulldown mechanism, this strap does the same job as a regular ratchet strap – just more safely. These ratchet straps can achieve higher pretension on loads but they are also easier to use and reduce the strain on your back and wrists that regular ratchet straps might cause. These ones can come with a long handle or regular handle and different tail lengths, depending on the height of your truck.

‘The Load Lock’ – J-Hook Ratchet Tie Down
The J-Hook Ratchet Tie Down, these ratchets differentiate themselves by the single hook positioned on a 90° angle to the strap. J-Hooks are often used for car-carriers or in heavy-haulage to move large equipment or machinery on flat-bed trucks. The hooks are inserted into access holes in the deck and because of their small footprint, can be used in tight or cramped locations.

‘The Double Load Lock’ – Double J-Hook
Double J-Hooks, although similar to J-hooks, feature a second hook running parallel to the first, offering enhanced hold and rigidity. They are commonly favoured by heavy haulage companies and car transporters because they easily latch onto the cut-outs on flat decks as well. While Double-J ratchet straps might seem like a convenient alternative to a hook and keeper for securing cargo on your all-round bar, we recommend using a Hook & Keeper instead. It provides a more secure hold, ensuring greater safety for you and others on the road.

‘The Track Pro’ – E and F-Track Ratchet Straps
E Track and F Track Ratchet Straps are commonly used inside Pantech trucks in order to keep pallets securely in place. Unlike traditional tie down ratchet straps, these straps are attached to the track inside the truck, usually an E or F track system, and sit horizontally across the truck to prevent the load inside from moving around.

By understanding the unique features of each type of ratchet strap, you can make informed decisions that match your specific load and hauling needs. This ensures not only the safety and security of your cargo but also helps you operate more efficiently and with greater peace of mind on every journey.
