Steel Transport: What Gear You Need When Starting Out

When you’re setting up for steel transport, getting the right equipment isn’t just about efficiency, it’s about safety, compliance, and protecting your reputation. Steel freight comes with some of the toughest load-restraint challenges in the transport industry. Heavy, sharp, round, and sometimes oily loads mean your restraint setup needs to meet strict requirements like the BlueScope Load Restraint Guidelines, AS/NZS 4380, and AS/NZS 4344.

At Tegral, we manufacture and supply a complete range of Australian-made, BlueScope-approved steel transport gear designed to help new operators start off strong and stay compliant from day one.

Chains and Binders – The Backbone of Restraint

Every steel carrier starts with a reliable chain kit.
Tegral’s G70 Chain Kits are tested and tagged to AS/NZS 4344:2001, ensuring lashing capacities of 3800 kg and 6000 kg LC respectively. Pair these with our Maxibinders, heat-treated alloy steel with a 350 kg pretension rating, to get a secure, efficient tie-down setup that meets industry expectations for BlueScope steel loads. The most commonly used for steel transport are 8mm and 10mm × 9 m Grab Hook assemblies.

Tegral’s binders and chains are individually tested, batch-stamped, and backed by local warranty, so you know exactly what’s securing your load.

Coil Racks and Cradles – For Safe Coil Handling

If you’re hauling steel coils, coil racks are your best friend.
Tegral’s Coil Rack Cradles (610mm, 710mm, and 810mm) are BlueScope-compliant, with integrated vulcanised rubber to prevent metal-on-metal damage and improve friction. They’re built from 6 mm high-strength galvanised steel, making them corrosion-resistant and long-lasting – no extra deck rubber required.

Major Australian fleets trust these racks because they meet both BlueScope specification and NHVR load-restraint principles.

Chain Angles – Protecting Steel Surfaces

Steel transport often involves direct chain contact, unless you use the right protection.
Tegral’s range of Chain Angles and Gal Coil Angles are designed to protect both the load and your chains from chafing and wear.

  • Chain Angle FLEX polyurethane protectors mould to the shape of the load and return to form when released – ideal for high-tension restraint on bundles or plates.
  • Gal Coil Angles and Metal Chain Angles are BlueScope-approved, hot-dip galvanised, and feature integrated rubber for anti-slip load protection.

Bright blaze-orange colouring provides instant visibility, while Tegral’s polyurethane formulation offers unmatched toughness and flexibility.

Timber & LVL Dunnage – Foundation for Every Load

Dunnage separates and stabilises your load, and it’s one of the most overlooked components by new operators.

Tegral offers both Australian Hardwood Timber Dunnage and LVL Timber Dunnage with Rubber, each approved by BlueScope to LRG-56T/BSL.

  • Hardwood Dunnage: locally sourced, filleted for airflow, and stored indoors to prevent mould.
  • LVL Dunnage with Rubber: waterproof, consistent, and high-friction (μ = 0.6) for maximum load stability.

Tegral’s slanted and standard dunnage designs suit a range of trailer dimensions, helping you stay within BlueScope and NHVR loading guidelines.

Coil Pads & Friction Mats – No Movement, No Damage

Surface friction is key when hauling steel. Without it, your restraint system works overtime.
Tegral’s Friction Mats and Coil Pads provide the grip and cushioning required by BlueScope specifications.

  • Friction Mats: made from elastomeric rubber and polyurethane, with a load capacity up to 630 t/m² and a temperature range from –40 °C to +120 °C.
  • Coil Pads: high-visibility polyurethane blocks that support up to 30 tonne coils, used by BlueScope, Southern Sheet & Coil, and other major processors.

Both options eliminate steel-on-steel contact and protect your deck from wear.

BettaHaul Rubber Bearer System – The Modern Alternative to Timber

For fleets investing long-term, Tegral’s BettaHaul Advanced Rubber Bearer System delivers a revolutionary solution. This modular system replaces timber dunnage with oil-resistant rubber bearers that maintain a high coefficient of friction, reducing the number of restraints needed.

The QuickClamp and FixedClamp options let you tailor each trailer setup, while attachments like pole holders and centre braces create a complete, engineered load-support system.

Compared to steel-on-steel restraint, BettaHaul requires up to 9× fewer lashings, improving safety and turnaround time. Read our full guide to BettaHaul.

Lifting Slings – For Safe Loading and Unloading

When you’re working around heavy plate or coil, lifting gear must meet AS 1353.1 and AS 4497.1 standards.
Tegral’s Flat Webbing Slings and Round Slings are proof-tested, serial-numbered, and supplied with individual test certificates

Steel Transport Catalogue 1.2. Made from high-tenacity polyester with reinforced eyes and wear padding, these slings are trusted by Australian steel processors for both durability and compliance.
