Six New Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas Announced for NSW & WA

Truckies travelling through New South Wales and Western Australia will soon have more safe places to rest, with six new projects funded under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area (HVRA) initiative.

The Australian Government has committed $140 million over 10 years to upgrade heavy vehicle rest areas across the country. This latest round, worth $20.9 million, with $10.04 million federally funded, includes new facilities and upgrades featuring showers, toilets, lighting, and expanded parking bays.

New and Upgraded Rest Areas

NSW

  • Halfway Tree Rest Area upgrade – Central Darling Shire
  • Narromine Heavy Vehicle Rest Area upgrade – Narromine Shire

WA

  • Rocky Gully Rest Area upgrade – Shire of Plantagenet
  • New rest area at Calingiri – Shire of Victoria Plains
  • Cranbrook Rest Area upgrade with eight new bays – Main Roads WA
  • New rest area at Mundrabilla on the Eyre Highway – Main Roads WA

Why It Matters

Government leaders say the upgrades will give drivers more safe, reliable places to rest—critical for fatigue management and road safety. With WA receiving four projects, the state’s freight network is set to benefit significantly, while NSW upgrades support key routes in the Central West.

A Step Forward for Road Safety

Better rest areas mean better conditions for truck drivers and safer roads for everyone. These new projects are a welcome boost for Australia’s freight industry and the people who keep it moving.
