Road safe during wet season

There were 534 truck drivers, 181 passengers and 134 pedestrians who have died on road related accidents in 2021. That alarming number is higher than what it ever was during previous years.

Regardless of the situation, drivers should always keep safety measures in mind when they’re driving in freezing environmental conditions. These could range from driving speed to proper gear usage to following just the right distance rule while cruising down the freeway.

For decades now, experience has taught us how dangerous roads could be. There is difficulty in knowing what we’re up against if it snows and even worse if it storms.

Public safety, and in particular our safety on the road, is a constant concern. Here are Tegral’s Tips to stay safe on the road.

  1. Maintain all road laws.
  • Road laws such as speed limit and road vehicle capacities have been designed to promote safe driving and should be adhered to at all times.
  • It is estimated that speeding consistently contributes to around 41 per cent of road fatalities.
  • Speeding results in:
  • The more time is needed to react and avoid a crash
  • The stopping distance required increases
  • The impact of a crash is more severe
  • The likelihood of death or serious injury increases
  1. Ensure you drive to suit conditions
  • Ensure your equipment is in working order
  • Drive more slowly than usual in bad weather and leave room in front
  • Turn on your headlights (make sure to use your low beams, not your high beams) in fog, whether you are driving through it at night OR during the day.
  • Be sure you and your passengers wear seatbelts at all times.
  • If you are at all tired, pull over (at a safe spot totally off the road) and rest your eyes.
  1. Ensure that you are fit to drive.
  • Driving requirements such as regulated driving hours must be adhered to reduce the effects of fatigue.
  • Get enough sleep at least eight hours a day.
  • Have your vision checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist to make sure your vision is good enough to drive.
  • Have your driving assessed by a certified driving instructor.
