Ready to Shift to Electric Trucks?

There is a combined vehicle fleet of 19.2 million vehicles in Australia according to Climate Analytics. It is one of the world’s worst transport pollution contributors.

Without having carbon emission standards at the moment, the Australian transport emissions are projected to be 82% higher than in 1990 in the year 2030.

The transport sector is the second largest contributor & emissions are projected to be growing fast compared to other countries like China and India which are expected to make greater improvements in their emission performance than Australia.

With Australia’s emissions continuing to rise due to vehicle emissions, are we ready for an eco-friendlier move and shift to electric vehicles to reduce the cost to our businesses and lessen the risks and impacts of climate change?

Australia’s combined vehicle fleet of 19.2 million vehicles is one of the world’s most polluting and least efficient.

While other countries are offering better transport alternatives in their cities, shifting to electronic prime movers and rigids will strengthen the efficiency of this break-through technology.

Here are some of the benefits of an electric road freight fleet:

  • Electric vehicle technology has the potential to provide significant benefits to operators of freight vehicles, including light commercial vans and heavy trucks; including lower operating expenses, less wear parts & simpler servicing.
  • The key benefits of transitioning to an electric road freight fleet include reduced greenhouse gas emissions & lower noise and air pollution reduction.
  • Environmental – Battery electric vehicles reduce emissions, except in the cases of carbon-intensive electricity production. It has been estimated that worldwide, electric trucks will influence road freight emissions from 2035 onwards and account for one-third of the emission reductions in 2050.
  • Public and driver health – Battery electric vehicles will improve public and driver health due to the lack of tailpipe emissions and reduced noise pollution.
  • Lifetime costs – Even with higher purchasing costs compared to a diesel truck, electric freight vehicles are competitive if the annual driving distance is high enough and the battery lifetime matches the vehicle lifetime.

Some of the major leaders in Australian logistics already shifted to using electric vehicles. Linfox Logistics launched their first electric truck for the iconic retailer, Coles. According to them, as the leading logistics that have relied traditionally on fossil fuels, they have committed to finding alternative sources of energy and discovering ways to reduce emissions and alternate fuel technologies.

Janus Electric also debuted their first battery-powered prime mover in Australia and has a creative plan to set up battery swap stations to reduce downtime for drivers and lengthen the life of the batteries.

This is a great move towards an eco-friendly and sustainable environment for all of us. Here at Tegral, we support any efforts to sustainability. We are looking to manufacture a range of recycled pallet angles in the future to both cut costs for our customers and retailers.
