The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has launched Operation Compass, a cross-border safety blitz aimed at cracking down on fatigue and mechanical issues among heavy vehicle drivers. Stretching across the Eyre Highway—from Port Augusta to the WA border—this operation zeroes in on a route that has seen an alarming number of serious and fatal crashes in recent years. Tragically, 11 lives have already been lost in heavy vehicle-related crashes across SA and WA in just the first three months of 2025.
NHVR Safety and Compliance Officers will be working with Main Roads WA to inspect vehicles and assess driver fatigue by checking work diaries. The focus is clear: reduce road trauma by holding operators accountable and eliminating unsafe practices. “Safety has no borders,” said NHVR Director Paul Simionato, as the regulator reinforces its commitment to making one of Australia’s busiest freight corridors safer for all road users.
