Cunningham Highway Upgrades to Commence this Year

The Queensland Government has announced major rehabilitation works on the Cunningham Highway, targeting problem-plagued sections between Tregony and Gladfield, as well as safety upgrades along the 100km stretch between Warwick and Inglewood.

After years of heavy freight traffic and extreme weather, parts of this key corridor have suffered from rough surfaces, reduced speed limits and ongoing safety concerns. Works will be delivered in stages, with priority given to the most damaged areas.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the upgrades are focused on delivering long-term solutions rather than short-term patch-ups.

Member for Southern Downs James Lister added that the works will address underlying drainage and stability issues, key contributors to road deterioration and vehicle damage.

What’s Included in the Upgrade?

The $18.1 million project, fully funded by the Queensland Government under the High Risk Roads Initiative, will deliver:

  • Road widening
  • Removal of roadside hazards
  • Intersection upgrades with protected right-turn lanes
  • Double barrier centre line marking
  • Audio tactile line marking
  • Installation of rub rails to existing guardrails

These improvements aim to reduce the risk of fatal and serious crashes, improve driving conditions, and strengthen one of Queensland’s most important freight links.

Why It Matters for Freight

The Cunningham Highway connects Goondiwindi and the Southern Downs, supporting agriculture, logistics and regional industry. For heavy vehicle operators, smoother surfaces and safer intersections mean:

  • Reduced vehicle wear and tear
  • Improved transit reliability
  • Lower safety risks
  • Greater supply chain confidence

As works roll out later this year, operators travelling through the corridor can expect staged upgrades aimed at rebuilding the highway properly, ensuring it remains a reliable freight backbone for years to come.
