South East Queensland Hauliers (SEQH) has launched the world’s first electric road train, marking a major milestone in sustainable heavy transport. This 53.5-metre Volvo FH-powered combination will operate out of the Port of Brisbane, moving empty containers between the port and SEQH’s Hemmant base. It’s joined by a new Volvo FM, also electric, which will run as a 30.35m A-double. While both vehicles will initially operate as singles, full deployment is expected by the end of June, pending final approvals.
This bold move demonstrates SEQH’s commitment to innovation and carbon reduction. Without relying on government subsidies, SEQH invested independently to bring this low-carbon, high-productivity solution to life. With plans to power the trucks entirely by solar energy, SEQH is not only cutting emissions but also proving electric heavy transport can be commercially viable. “We just did it,” said Managing Director Brett Plummer. “The numbers worked — so we made the switch.” It’s a significant leap forward not only for Queensland but for the future of logistics nationwide.
