Which Ratchet Handle Coating is the Most Durable?

There are many different types of ratchet handle coatings available on the market today. Depending on the application, different coatings may be more or less appropriate. The most common types of ratchet handle coatings are:

  • Powder coating
  • Anodized coating
  • Zinc Coating

Powder coating

A form of coating known as powder coating is applied as a powder and then heated to cure. Given that it offers a broad variety of colours, powder coating is frequently employed for ornamental purposes but does ensure a tough, hard-to-chip and long-lasting surface finish. This is because the chemical bonds give a superior coating It holds well to extreme weather and physical impact, meaning it’s resistant to scratches, abrasions, and chips. The most durable and long-lasting ratchets stocked by Tegral have a powder coated ratchet and hook and keeper fittings.

The R0174 is the most heavy duty standard ratchet stocked by Tegral and is available here. Bulk buys apply.

Anodized coating is an electrolytic process that creates a protective oxide layer on the surface of the metal. It is not as tough as powdercoating but does provide a superior form of protection compared to stock finish metal. The advantage of anodizing is it can be conducted in various colours.

Zinc Dipping. Parts are submerged in molten zinc during hot dipping. The zinc functions as a sacrificial coating, which means that if the zinc coating is compromised, the remaining zinc will protect the open steel. The zinc produces a layer that keeps corrosive elements from accessing the core. The majority of cargo control or load restraint gear has zinc plating. This includes G70 chain and chain fittings, and standard ratchet straps.

The best form of protective coating does depend on the requirements of the user. For instance if you are looking for a cost-effective ratchet strap we recommend the standard zinc dipped ratchet such as these. Alternatively, if you are looking for longevity and durability of a ratchet we recommend a powder coated ratchet such as this.
