An Overview Of Load Restraint Curtain

Load restraint curtains alone may offer sideways restraint, and they may be used in conjunction with blocking restraint. When a force of 0.5g is applied to the vehicle in a sideways direction, the restraint must be sufficient to prevent the load from shifting.

The load may be restrained in the forward and backward directions by the headboard, rear gate/door, and vehicle construction, either alone or in conjunction with blocking restraint. When employed as a component of the whole LR system, these products will need to be rerated and certified. The restraint must be strong enough to prevent the load from shifting when a force of 0.8G or 0.5G is applied to the vehicle in either the forward or backward directions. A certified LRC system may contain documentation of a collection of restraint systems that together make up a comprehensive LR systems package.

A load restraint curtain may form part of or be a certified LR system. The load restraint curtain may be certified to meet all or some of the LR performance standard requirements.

A CLRC (Certified Load Restraint Curtain) system usually includes:

  • The body of the trailer/truck
  • Webbing, buckles, hooks, rollers, and webbing loop connections
  • Internal vehicle blocking structures (support posts and roof structure)
  • May include gates, doors, hinges, and other types of LR equipment plus mezzanine floors and supporting posts/panels/gates

An LRC system must restrain a load so that it meets the LR performance standards.

An LR curtain alone may offer sideways restraint, and it may be used in conjunction with blocking restraint. When a force of 0.5g is applied to the vehicle in a sideways direction, the restraint must be sufficient to prevent the load from shifting. As stated in the LRG Part 2 Section F- 5 test standards, this force can be produced by 30 degrees tilting the laden vehicle.

A combination of restraint systems may constitute a complete LR systems package and be documented in a Certified LRC system.

By removing the need for an operator to climb onto the load deck of the heavy truck, CLRC systems assist save loading and unloading times and increase safety. Even if curtains are not a part of the load restraint system, they should always be opened and closed with caution. Once the stability of the weight has been determined, if the curtain is bulging, the load has moved and has to be opened carefully.
